Troja Chateau in Prague

Troja Chateau (Troja Palace) in Prague is one of the most significant Baroque palaces in Czechia. Most likely that the name of the Chateau came up from the decoration of the Palace stairway. There you can see dramatic scenes of the triumph of the Olympian gods over the Titans. The name “Troja” stands for the Chateau the whole neighborhood. Let’s discover this place in more details.

History

Troja Castle in Prague HistoryThe Count Václav Vojtěch from Šternberk began the construction of the Troja Chateau in 1679 when he successfully obtained a title of nobility. He lived there with his spouse and daughter. The architectures of the Chateau were Giovanni Domenico Orsi and later Jean Baptiste Mathey. The latter finished the construction of the palace in 1685 at started to work on the gardens.

After the Šternberk dynasty in 1763 Maria Theresa bought this Palace for the Noble Maidens School. The last private owner of the Troja Palace was Alois Svoboda. But finally he sold Troja Chateau to the Czechoslovak state for 1 CZK.

From 1977 until 1989 the Chateau was under the reconstruction. Great opening was 1989. Since that time Troja Palace is the house of Prague City Gallery and the museum of Czech painting of the 19th century. During the flood in 2002 the Chateau’s basement and the garden were flooded. There was a huge damage caused by Vltava and almost the whole Garden was restored after it.

What to see in the Chateau?

What to see in Troja CastleThere are several things that you definitely need to see in Troja Chateau. First of all, it is the Grand “Emperor’s” Hall (Imperial Hall). The main Hall has its unique decorations created by the Dutch painters Abraham and Isaac Godyn. There are almost 1,400 m2 of tempera paintings, that also contain illustrations of Habsburg dynasty ruling and the theme of the victory celebration over the Turks at Vienna.

Troja ChateauAnother place to visit – Chinese Chambers of the Chateau. There are 3 rooms located on the 1st floor of the Chateau. The walls of these rooms are full of remarkable paintings with Chinese landscapes, views and ornaments. Ceilings are decorated with the original paintings of the ancient myths.

One more attractive place in the Chateau are the Stables. They are decorated with paintings of different myths and legends where horses played a significant role.

Walking around the Palace

The most beautiful place outside the palace is the Royal Troja Chateau Gardens. The Garden is divided in several parts and has 2 floors. You can enjoy walking near the historical fountains, check a small natural labyrinth, explore the orangery or a rare collection of vases or even try a glass of wine in the wine shop.

How to get?

The most comfortable way to get to Troja Chateau is to get a transfer from your hotel directly to the place. We can offer you the best drive from your hotel directly to the Palace. I don’ recommend to use taxi in Prague.

If you want to see how public transport system works in Prague, go for it. The route from the city centre to Troja is simple, but interesting. Find the red metro line (Line C).
